Most People don't think of this game as a big game, or even hear about it, but this game is FUN! The game was previously called World of Planes, and caused WG to rename its game to World of Warplanes. Then this game was changed to War Thunder to prevent confusion. Now with it in Open Beta, I got to get my hands on it and while I don't have enough time in it to give a full review(expect a full beta review later), I'll give you my review of what I have played.
First off if you are familier with WoT, you'll be able to adapt to this because of the credit system, tier system, etc. They even fixed several bugs in WG's game, your crews won't forget how to fly a plane if they get put in a new one, unlike WoT. Gaijin(The developer) also implemented WG's planned Garage Battle mode, which means that you get to choose aircrafts that you want to participate in a battle. These however are limited to one faction, which means you can't pair a Spitfire with your Bf 109. The gameplay works, and you notice that people normally use their lower tiered planes and fighters at the start, then use their higher tiers and bombers later on.
With that said I'm not that high in the tiers. There are 20 tiers and all the trees are incomplete(most lines are ending around 13 or 15), and the only tier 20s are planes like the ME-262 and the F-86. The factions in the game are Britain, USSR, USA, Japan, and Germany. I'm currently at tier 2 in USA, tier 5 in Germany, and 0 in the other 3 but I can say that the game is forgiving on low tiers. If you are flying a tier 0 P-26 Peashooter, you can still take out a Tier 3 Ju-87 Stuka. The only balancing issues in the low tiers is with the Americans, because they get .50 cal guns while everyone else is using 7.7 mms and .30 cals, along with getting some OP bombers like the PBY which is a tier 3 and is similar to the Mini-Maus(Pz S38) in WoT. Premium planes work similar to the tanks in WoT, but they aren't unique planes except for a few gift planes for alpha and beta testers, and are just different versions of planes already in the Tech Trees. examples of the main 2 types of premium planes are captured ones like how the Japanese get a F4U Corsair with the red meatball on the side, and different models like Germans who get the Fw-190 D-1 but also get the premium plane known as the Fw-190 D-3 which is the same aircraft in every stat.
Free members are also allowed to avoid paying money more than WoT, because it looks like even in high tiers repairs are still low, you can still put camo and decals on planes(with more customization than WoT!), and doesn't feature premium ammo. There is no way to buy power which keeps it balanced. I'll put more impressions and a review up soon.
